Senator Francis Fadahunsi, representing Osun East Senatorial District, on Wednesday honoured the invitation of the Nigeria Police Force by appearing at the Osun State Police Command Headquarters in Osogbo over his controversial “Kill Accord” remarks ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
The senator arrived at the command headquarters at about 2:35 p.m., accompanied by the Commissioner of Police in charge of Election Security, Samuel Erale, according to Channels Television.
Fadahunsi was invited by the police to explain comments he allegedly made during an APC political gathering in Ilesa, where he was captured in a viral video making remarks that critics interpreted as inciting violence against members of the Accord Party.
The invitation followed widespread public outrage over the video, prompting the police to commence an investigation into whether the senator’s comments violated electoral laws or amounted to incitement capable of disrupting public peace.
Before Wednesday’s appearance, the police had issued a formal invitation directing the senator to report to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Osogbo to clarify the circumstances surrounding the remarks.
The Osun State Police Command had also warned political parties, candidates and supporters against making inflammatory statements capable of escalating tension ahead of the August 15 governorship election, stressing that anyone found culpable of electoral offences would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
Fadahunsi, however, has maintained that his comments were taken out of context.
In a statement issued through his media office, he said his “Kill Accord” remark was purely metaphorical and intended to urge APC supporters to defeat the Accord Party through the ballot box, not violence.
His appearance before investigators comes as security agencies intensify efforts to ensure a peaceful, credible and violence-free governorship election in Osun State.
