The All Progressives Congress (APC) has inaugurated its Environment and Sanitation Sub-Committee for the 2026 National Convention, setting the tone for a clean, safe and environmentally sustainable gathering in Abuja.
The inauguration, held on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, marks a key milestone in the party’s preparations, as the sub-committee becomes the first to be formally constituted by the Convention Central Working Committee.
Performed by former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, who serves as Deputy Chairman of the Convention Central Committee, the sub-committee is chaired by the Governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Usman Ododo, represented by the state Commissioner for Environment.
Speaking at the ceremony, Anyim commended the leadership of the Secretary of the committee, Senator Uche Ekwunife, describing her as highly organised and committed.
He expressed confidence in the committee’s capacity to deliver on its mandate, stressing that environmental sanitation remains critical to the overall success of the convention. According to him, a clean and orderly environment reflects the discipline and image of the party, while also ensuring the comfort of participants.
In her response, Ekwunife thanked the party leadership for the confidence reposed in the committee and assured that members had already begun strategic planning to ensure effective execution of their responsibilities. She noted that efforts were underway to guarantee a hygienic and well-managed environment before, during and after the convention.
She also used the occasion to invite the Deputy Chairman to the committee’s flagship awareness programme, “Walk for Safe Environment and Safety”, to sensitise stakeholders and participants on environmental responsibility ahead of the convention scheduled for March 28 and 29, 2026.
Reaffirming the committee’s vision, Ekwunife stressed that maintaining a clean and safe environment throughout the convention is non-negotiable. She highlighted the theme, “Cleaner Abuja, Great Convention”, under the broader “Keep APC Convention Clean Initiative”, as the guiding principle for the committee’s activities.
The committee further pledged to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure environmental compliance throughout the convention period, with a view to setting a benchmark for future political gatherings in Nigeria.
