An impeachment storm is brewing in Oyo State following allegations of inducement and political pressure within the State House of Assembly, with former First Lady and ambassador-designate to Austria, Florence Ajimobi, firmly denying any link to an alleged plot to unseat Governor Seyi Makinde.
Ajimobi, in a statement issued by her media office, described the allegations as “entirely false, baseless, and a deliberate act of disinformation,” insisting that she neither convened nor attended any meeting (whether in Lagos or elsewhere), where discussions about impeachment or destabilisation of the Oyo State Government were held.
“At no time did I convene, attend, or participate in any such meeting with any individual or group for the purpose of discussing impeachment or destabilising the Oyo State Government,” she stated.
She warned that attempts to link her to the alleged plot were politically motivated and aimed at tarnishing her reputation.
The controversy, however, extends beyond Ajimobi’s denial, as developments within the Assembly suggest that the issue is rooted in more complex political manoeuvring.
Reports swirling about a possible impeachment plot triggered a strategic emergency meeting at the residence of Governor Makinde, where lawmakers deliberated on concerns over alleged efforts to create a rift between the executive and legislative arms of government.
The meeting, according to insiders, was prompted by intelligence pointing to moves targeting the leadership of the House.
In the aftermath, members of the Assembly began publicly declaring their positions, with some distancing themselves from any impeachment plan and others maintaining silence—fueling speculation of internal divisions.
Chief Whip, Gbenga Oyekola, emerged as a central voice in the unfolding developments.
In a detailed statement, he denied any involvement in a plot to unseat the governor and disclosed that the Speaker of the House, Adebo Ogundoyin, had allegedly been approached by influential political and traditional figures regarding his political future.
According to Oyekola, such approaches reportedly included offers of financial inducement. He added that the Speaker rejected the offers.
Similarly, Deputy Speaker Abiodun Mohammed Fadeyi and other lawmakers denied any involvement in an impeachment plot or receipt of inducements.
Ajimobi, while distancing herself from the controversy, also clarified that she has no role in the affairs of the Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo State, noting that her focus remains on humanitarian and professional engagements.
She further cautioned that the spread of false information could attract legal consequences.
“I will not be distracted by unfounded and mischievous claims aimed at dragging my name into political controversies,” she added.
