Nigeria’s opposition politics took a dramatic turn on Monday as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) officially announced former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 presidential election, confirming his alliance with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in what is shaping into an early opposition coalition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement issued on Monday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said Amaechi’s emergence followed extensive consultations with stakeholders nationwide after the conclusion of its presidential primary election.
According to the party, Amaechi secured the vice-presidential slot after emerging runner-up in the presidential primary process, paving the way for what the party described as a strategic alliance built on leadership experience and national appeal.
“The National Leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is proud to announce that the Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has been selected as the Vice-Presidential Candidate of our great party for the 2027 Presidential Election”, the statement read.
The party described the Atiku-Amaechi partnership as more than a routine political arrangement, insisting that both men represent tested leadership capable of steering Nigeria out of its current economic and security difficulties.
“The proposed partnership between His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi represents more than a political alliance; it is the coming together of two tested statesmen with the experience, national reach, and leadership capacity required to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges”, the statement added.
The ADC highlighted Amaechi’s extensive political résumé, arguing that few Nigerian politicians possess comparable experience across both legislative and executive governance structures.
Amaechi previously served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly before going on to serve two terms as Governor of Rivers State. He later joined the federal cabinet as Minister of Transportation, where he oversaw major infrastructure projects, including rail modernisation programmes under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
“Few political leaders in Nigeria today possess such extensive and balanced experience across both the legislative and executive arms of government”, the party noted.
The ADC further argued that Amaechi’s strong political influence in the South-South region and across Southern Nigeria would significantly boost the party’s electoral prospects and strengthen the national spread of the presidential ticket.
According to the opposition party, the Atiku-Amaechi alliance reflects what it described as a “truly national ticket” capable of bridging Nigeria’s long-standing regional and political divides.
“Together, Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi embody a truly national ticket — one that bridges regions, generations, and political traditions. The ADC is prepared to govern, prepared to unite the nation, and prepared to deliver results”, the statement said.
The ADC expressed confidence that the alliance would strengthen its opposition coalition while offering Nigerians what it described as a credible alternative government focused on economic recovery, national security, job creation and restoring unity across the country.
