Ikwuano local government council in Abia state on Monday launched a massive fumigation of public places in the area against the coronavirus just as it has tightened the state border with Akwa Ibom state.
So far, the places covered include the council headquarters in Isiala Oboro, the police, and army barracks, the 42 health centres, and major markets in the four clans in the area among many others.
Speaking to Thisage at the commencement of the exercise at the council headquarters, the chairman of the transition committee, Barrister Stanley Ojigbo said it had become very necessary in view of the prevailing circumstance.
“Before now, we have increased our public awareness campaign on the dangers of the virus through the traditional rulers, community and religious leaders, and the people’s response has been very encouraging,” he said.
He noted that as there is no known cure yet for the global pandemic, the major trust of their message has been the need for regular hand-washing, use of hand sanitizers, personal hygiene, and social distancing
He explained that to ensure the virus does not spread to the state through the area, the council has mounted a robust surveillance and check at the border in line with the lockdown of the state by the state government.
The chairman, who commended Governor Okezie Ikpeazu and members of the state executive committee for their untiring campaign against the virus, assured that the council on its part has sworn to replicate the efforts in the area.
“Though it is not by our making that the virus has not spread to the area in particular and the state in general, but by God’s grace, on our part as a council, we will continue to do the needful to protect our people from it.
Reacting to the exercise, one of the youth leaders in the area, Comrade Eberechukwu Nnabuihe said the intervention is very timely, describing Ojigbo as a very pragmatic leader with vision.
Similarly, a senior staff of the council, pleading anonymity, said since the chairman assumed the office, the area has witnessed a quantum leap in development and urged him to remain focused.
