Three audio recordings between the control centre in Madrid and two train drivers shed more light on what happened minutes before the fatal crash on Wednesday.
They appear to show that one high-speed train was given clearance to move even though another had stalled. The ensuing collision is one of the worst rail disasters in Europe’s modern history.
At least 69 people have died, while rescuers were working through the night to search for victims, with many of those killed still to be identified. Protesters gathered in Madrid overnight, reportedly calling for the resignation of the prime minister and the transport minister.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has spoken about the efforts to assist those affected by the crash. BBC reports
