Accident Claims 2 Gombe State CAN Members, Injures Many

Two members of the Women Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (WOWI CAN), Gombe State chapter have been confirmed dead and many injured following an accident near Ubakala Junction in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

They were returning home from the 2017 Annual Conference of the wing in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State when the tragedy occurred on the Abia State axis of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Express Way.

Reports said the accident occurred when the 12- seated bus in which they were travelling hit the rear of a stationery tipper parked beside heaps of chipping along the way.

The bodies of the deceased whose names were given as Mrs. Ladi Lawal, the secretary of the wing and Mrs Abigail Samari have been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, where the survivors are  been treated.

Speaking to our correspondent on the accident at the centre, the state Chairman of the association, Senior Apostle Emmanuel Agomoh expressed deep shock over the deaths.

He said as soon as he was informed of the accident through a telephone call in the early hours of Sunday morning, he summoned his executive committee members to the scene for required action.

Agomuo, who expressed delight that the survivors were responding to treatments, added that the chapter had contacted the deputy governor of Gombe state over the accident.

Similarly, the state Chairperson of the wing, Mrs Chimenma Okwara bemoaned the accident, commending the quick intervention of the chapter and the centre.

Efforts to obtain police reaction to the accident at the office of the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), state Command Headquarters, along Bende Road proved abortive.
