The Police Command in Kaduna has arraigned 24 suspects before a Magistrate Court sitting at NDA Junction, Kaduna, over the mob killing of a woman in the Maraban Jos area of the state, while the state government has welcomed the development as a critical step towards justice and the reinforcement of the rule of law.
The suspects were arraigned following investigations into the June 21, 2026 incident in which the victim was allegedly attacked and killed by an enraged mob after being removed from police custody.
According to the police, the defendants are facing charges bordering on criminal conspiracy, inciting public disturbance, mischief, destruction of public and police property, and culpable homicide.
During proceedings before the court, the matter was mentioned and subsequently adjourned until July 21, 2026, for further hearing.
The court also ordered that the 24 suspects be remanded in a correctional facility pending the determination of the case.
The Police Command condemned the act of mob justice, describing it as unlawful and inimical to public order. The Command warned that individuals who take the law into their own hands would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Police authorities disclosed that investigations into the incident remain ongoing, revealing that more than 100 additional suspects are currently under investigation for their alleged roles in the attack.
The Command stated that anyone found culpable would also be charged in court.
Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Rabiu, assured residents that the Command remains committed to securing justice for the victim and maintaining law and order across the state.
Rabiu urged members of the public to report grievances, suspicions, and criminal allegations through lawful channels rather than resorting to violence, stressing that due process remains the only acceptable means of seeking justice.
Meanwhile, the State government in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki, said the arrest and arraignment of the suspects represented a significant step towards ensuring accountability and preserving public confidence in the justice system.
“The Kaduna State Government welcomes the arrest and arraignment of the suspects linked to this unfortunate incident and commends the Police Command for its swift and professional response.
“The rule of law remains the cornerstone of every democratic society, and no grievance, allegation, or suspicion can justify taking another person’s life outside the framework of the law,” Maiyaki stated.
He reiterated the position of Governor Uba Sani’s administration against mob violence, jungle justice, and all forms of extra-judicial actions, stressing that no individual or group has the authority to assume the responsibilities of law enforcement agencies and the judiciary.
According to him, the tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of lawlessness and the need for citizens to channel complaints and allegations through established legal and security institutions.
“Governor Uba Sani’s administration will not tolerate any form of mob action or jungle justice.
“We urge residents to always report suspected criminal activities to security agencies and allow the law to take its course. Anyone found taking the law into their own hands will face the full consequences of the law, regardless of status or affiliation,” he said.
Maiyaki expressed confidence in the ongoing police investigation and noted that the disclosure that more than 100 additional suspects remain under investigation demonstrates the authorities’ determination to bring all those involved to justice.
He assured residents that the state government would continue to support security agencies and judicial institutions in their efforts to ensure accountability, maintain public order, and safeguard the rights of citizens.
The commissioner also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and called on residents to remain peaceful, cooperate with security agencies, and support efforts aimed at preserving peace, justice, and security across the state.
“The sanctity of human life must be respected at all times. Kaduna State will continue to stand firmly for justice, peaceful coexistence, and adherence to the rule of law. We must collectively reject violence and vigilantism in all its forms,” the statement added.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all persons found culpable in the incident are prosecuted through due process, while urging citizens to remain law-abiding and vigilant.
