Police Probe Brutal Murder of 29-Year-Old Woman Found in Abuja Canal

From Victor Osula, Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has launched an investigation into the brutal killing of Blessing Moshood, a 29-year-old Sociology graduate of Kogi State University, whose body was allegedly dumped inside a canal in the Jikwoyi area of Abuja.

The deceased was reportedly discovered half-naked, wearing only a top, after she was declared missing by family members following her sudden disappearance last Thursday night.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine, said the case was under active investigation, following growing public outrage over the gruesome circumstances surrounding the death.

Details of the incident emerged after the deceased’s sister, Abigail Moshood, narrated Blessing’s last known movements before her disappearance.

According to Abigail, Blessing left their residence around 8pm after speaking with someone on the phone.

She explained that the deceased later contacted the family about an hour afterwards, informing them that she intended to return briefly to pick up her phone charger, which she had forgotten at home.

However, concern reportedly grew after Blessing failed to return home that night and could no longer be reached the following day.

Abigail said the family’s fears worsened after residents began discussing the discovery of a woman’s corpse inside a canal in Jikwoyi, adding that the description of the victim’s hairstyle matched that of her sister.

“We later heard people talking about the body of a woman discovered inside a canal, and someone described the type of hairstyle the deceased had, which matched my sister’s,” she said.

She disclosed that their mother broke down in tears after learning that officers attached to the Jikwoyi Police Station had evacuated the corpse to a mortuary in Mararaba, Nasarawa State.

“My mother started crying, and we also learnt that policemen from the Jikwoyi Police Station had evacuated the corpse, which was found half-naked with only a top on, to a mortuary in Mararaba, Nasarawa State,” Abigail stated.

The deceased’s sister further revealed that she later visited the Jikwoyi Police Station where police officers allegedly showed her photographs of the recovered body, confirming it was indeed Blessing.

According to her, an officer at the station, who requested anonymity, assured the family that detectives had commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing.

SP Josephine reiterated that the Command was pursuing all leads connected to the case, while efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the alleged murder.
