The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s International Workers’ Day, in recognition of the immense contributions of Nigerian workers to national growth, economic stability and public service delivery.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who congratulated workers across the country and praised their resilience, patriotism and unwavering commitment to nation-building despite prevailing economic challenges.
In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, the Federal Government described Nigerian workers as the backbone of the nation’s progress, stressing that their sacrifices and productivity remain critical to Nigeria’s development aspirations.
“The Federal Government has declared Friday, 1st May 2026, a public holiday to celebrate this year’s International Workers Day,.The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced this on behalf of the Federal Government. He congratulated workers across the country on this year’s celebration”, the statement read.
The minister further commended workers in both the public and private sectors for their hard work, dedication and continued service to the country.
“The Minister commended Nigerian workers for their hard work and dedication to national development. He noted that their efforts are essential for the nation’s growth and prosperity”, the statement added.
International Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day, is celebrated annually on May 1 across many countries of the world to honour the contributions of workers and the labour movement. In Nigeria, the occasion traditionally features rallies, policy engagements, labour union activities and renewed calls for improved welfare, better working conditions and economic reforms.
Tunji-Ojo used the occasion to reaffirm the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to policies aimed at improving workers’ welfare, strengthening workplace safety and creating an enabling environment for economic growth and job creation.
According to the minister, the Federal Government remains focused on promoting initiatives that would enhance productivity while ensuring that workers receive the recognition and support they deserve.
He also urged Nigerian workers to continue embracing the values of patriotism, diligence, professionalism and integrity in the discharge of their responsibilities.
The statement further called on citizens to use the Workers’ Day celebration as an opportunity to reflect on the importance of national unity, peace and collective responsibility in advancing the country’s development.
“While wishing workers a successful celebration, the minister urged Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding, and to use the occasion to reflect on the importance of unity and diligence in nation-building”, the statement noted.
