President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians to stand firmly behind the nation’s Armed Forces following the tragic loss of soldiers in a coordinated terrorist attack on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State, describing the fallen troops as heroes whose sacrifices will never be forgotten.
In a statement marked by both grief and resolve, the President expressed deep sadness over the deaths of the soldiers of the 29 Task Force Brigade, Operation HADIN KAI, who came under attack in the early hours of Thursday, April 9, 2026.
The incident, confirmed by the Defence Headquarters, resulted in the loss of lives even as troops mounted a fierce defence that ultimately repelled the terrorists.
President Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and the Nigerian military, urging them to take solace in the nation’s appreciation of their courage and selfless service.
“I extend my condolences to the families of our gallant soldiers, led by Brigadier-General Oseni Omoh Braimah, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of our country. The government will never forget their sacrifices. Their sacrifices will not be in vain,” the President said.
He praised the bravery and professionalism of the troops, noting that their resistance prevented the attackers from overrunning the military formation and safeguarded surrounding communities from further harm.
Highlighting ongoing military efforts, the President disclosed that Nigerian forces have continued to sustain intense land and air offensives against insurgents, neutralising several fighters and commanders.
He described the latest attack as a desperate move by weakened terrorist elements.
“From the reports I have received, our armed forces have been conducting sustained, intense operations against the insurgents. The counterattack is a sign of desperation,” he stated.
While mourning the fallen heroes, President Tinubu urged the Military High Command and personnel across all theatres of operation not to be discouraged by the setback, but to remain steadfast in their duty.
“I urge our officers and men: do not lose heart, do not be weary, do not be discouraged. Continue to serve with honour, courage, and patriotism.
“The government will always stand by the Armed Forces, provide more of the equipment needed, and ensure the welfare of all who risk their lives for our safety,” he said.
In a strong appeal to national unity, the President called on Nigerians and the media to support the military in its ongoing fight against insurgency and banditry, stressing that public solidarity is crucial to achieving lasting peace.
“We should desist from celebrating or condoning attacks against our troops. These soldiers are our heroes—unforgettable and irreplaceable,” he emphasised.
Tinubu also extended his condolences to the government and people of Borno State, acknowledging the continued impact of insurgency on the state while expressing optimism that collaborative efforts between federal and state authorities would lead to a decisive victory.
The statement, signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, reinforces the administration’s commitment to strengthening the Armed Forces and sustaining the fight against terrorism.
