One of Nigeria’s famous midfielder, Henry Nwosu is dead, aged 62. A teammate in the victorious 1980 AFCON squad and football idol, Segun Odegbami announced the death in the early hours of Saturday.
According to Odegbami, Nwosu died after spending five days in hospital battling for his life.
He said, “the one I call ‘Youngest Millionaire’ passed on at 4:00 am this morning at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos where he had been in Intensive Care since Wednesday.
It is with deep pain in my heart that I have to be the conveyor of the news of the death of Henry Nwosu MON, the youngest of the victorious 1980 AFCON squad. ‘
May he rest peacefully with our Creator in Heaven.
Nwosu, born in 1963 in Imo State was the youngest member of the 1980 AFCON squad, widely celebrated for his role in Nigeria’s triumph at the Africa Cup of Nations, where the Green Eagles secured their first continental title on home soil.
His football carrier started in 1979 with the now defunct New Nigeria Bank football team in Benin-City , Edo State through ASEC Mimosa in Cote d’Voire, African Continental Bank FC and then the Green Eagles as a midfielder, capping it with an illustrious managerial role with Ibom Stars, Nigeria U-17, Union Bank team and Gateway United.
