In a decisive move to advance state policing and strengthen accountability, Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu on Wednesday inaugurated an eight-member committee to oversee the implementation of state police and the rollout of his nationwide policing vision.
The inauguration marked IGP Disu’s first formal engagement with senior officers following his confirmation as the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police, days after the Nigeria Police Council unanimously ratified his appointment.
Addressing top officers, IGP Disu emphasized that leadership is defined by responsibility, not rank, urging officers to embrace professionalism and accountability as guiding principles across all commands.
“Authority is strongest when exercised with restraint. Every Nigerian must be treated with dignity, fairness, and justice, regardless of status or background,” he said, stressing that respect for human rights remains fundamental.
The new police boss also announced plans to strengthen internal oversight mechanisms, directing that the Public Complaint Unit and X-Squad operate independently to enhance transparency and integrity.
He further noted that decentralising police functions will enable all levels of government to participate actively in national security management.
Professor Olu Ogunsakin has been appointed to lead the eight-member committee tasked with steering the state police initiative.
The inauguration aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to decentralised policing, with Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris affirming that Nigeria is now ripe for reforms aimed at enhancing security.
The launch of the committee under IGP Disu signals a renewed focus on discipline, human rights, and professional integrity, marking a potential turning point in the operations and oversight of the Nigeria Police Force.
