Billionaire industrialist and Chairman of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu, has fulfilled his $500,000 pledge to Nigeria’s Super Eagles, commending the team’s bravery and commitment despite their semifinal exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Rabiu confirmed the redemption of the pledge in a statement posted on his official X handle, insisting that the Super Eagles deserved to be rewarded for their outstanding performance and fighting spirit throughout the tournament.
Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 campaign ended on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, after the Super Eagles lost 4–2 on penalties to host nation, Morocco, following a goalless draw after 120 minutes at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
The Super Eagles had impressed football fans across the continent with a dominant run, recording a perfect group-stage performance, scoring 14 goals before the semifinals, and eliminating Algeria 2–0 in the quarterfinals under head coach, Eric Chelle.
Rabiu’s initial pledge was made after Nigeria’s quarterfinal victory over Algeria on January 10. He had promised $500,000 if the team won their semifinal encounter, alongside a bonus of $50,000 for each goal scored. He also pledged an additional $1 million, plus $100,000 per goal, should Nigeria go on to win the tournament.
However, despite the painful semifinal defeat, the BUA Group founder chose to stand by his word.
In his statement, Rabiu praised the players for their resilience and unity, noting that their efforts had made the nation proud.
“To our brave Super Eagles, you fought with your hearts, gave your all, and showed true courage and determination on the pitch. Though it wasn’t meant to be this time, you have made every Nigerian proud”, Rabiu said.
He added that success in football does not always reflect the effort put in by players, stressing that the team’s passion and commitment were worthy of recognition.
“Sometimes, even our best efforts don’t bring the outcome we hope for, but the spirit, passion, and unity you displayed are what truly matter. You left everything on the field, and that is worthy of celebration,” he stated.
Rabiu explained that the $500,000 payment was in recognition of the team’s hard work and the joy they brought to Nigerians during the tournament.
“As a token of appreciation for your remarkable journey and effort, I am still going ahead to fulfil the pledge of $500,000. This is in recognition of your dedication and sacrifice”, he said.
Rabiu also expressed optimism about the team’s future, urging the players to remain focused and confident ahead of future competitions.
“Keep your heads high, Super Eagles. The experience and lessons from this tournament will fuel even greater success next time. Nigeria will always be proud of you, and we believe in your future victories,” he added.
Rabiu’s gesture has drawn widespread commendation from sports stakeholders and fans, who described it as a strong show of encouragement and support for the national team despite their narrow defeat.
