The Federal Government has dismissed as false and misleading reports alleging plans to unlawfully arrest, detain or prosecute opposition political figures, insisting that no such programme exists under the name “ADP4VIP.”
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the document currently in circulation claiming the creation of a covert multi-agency task force to target opposition figures is entirely fabricated.
The alleged document had claimed that a task force involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser, was established to aggressively pursue prominent opposition politicians without due process.
Idris categorically denied the claims, stressing that there is no programme known as “ADP4VIP” (Arrest, Detain, Prosecute for Very Important Persons), describing the narrative as deliberate disinformation designed to mislead the public and undermine confidence in democratic institutions.
According to the Minister, the administration of President Bola Tinubu, remains firmly focused on its core priorities of implementing far-reaching economic reforms, combating insecurity, expanding trade opportunities and restoring investor confidence.
He added that attempts by some political actors to portray lawful accountability as political persecution amount to a dangerous diversion, aimed at shielding influential individuals from answering to the law.
Reaffirming the government’s democratic credentials, Idris noted that the 1999 Constitution (as amended) guarantees all Nigerians the right to freedom of association and political participation, stressing that President Tinubu is a committed democrat who swore to uphold these constitutional provisions.
“The Federal Government remains unwavering in its commitment to the rule of law, due process and the independence of institutions,” the statement said, adding that law enforcement and judicial agencies are expected to operate professionally, without interference, and strictly in the national interest.
The government also warned against the spread of misinformation and fake news, particularly as the country approaches the 2027 general elections, a period often characterised by heightened political propaganda and blackmail.
While urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and reject divisive narratives, the Minister assured that the Tinubu administration would not be distracted from delivering tangible governance outcomes.
“As we draw the curtain on 2025 and step into a new year, this government remains committed to continuity, progress and results for Nigerians”, Idris said.
Idris, however, emphasised that while all Nigerians retain the constitutional right to lawful political activity, security and anti-corruption agencies will continue to discharge their statutory responsibilities in the interest of the nation.
