The Democratic Republic of Congo qualified for the inter-confederation play-offs in March after defeating Nigeria 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the CAF play-off final. The result ended Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the World Cup.
Brentford midfielder, Frank Onyeka, gave Nigeria the lead in the third minute, but DR Congo responded through forward, Meschack Elia, who scored his second goal in World Cup qualifying in the 31st minute. The equaliser set up a tense second half.
Nigeria suffered a significant setback when top scorer, Victor Osimhen, was had to be substituted in the 46th minute due to reported injury concerns. Without their main attacking threat, the Super Eagles struggled to break down their opponents during the remainder of normal time and extra time.
With no further goals across 120 minutes, the match went to penalties. Nigeria missed three of their seven penalties, with Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon and Semi Ajayi all denied. Bruno Onyemaechi, and Chidera Ejuke converted for the Super Eagles. DR Congo saw efforts from Samuel Moutoussamy and Axel Tuanzebe saved, but Noah Sadiki, Fiston Mayele and Michel-Ange Balikwisha all found the net to claim victory.
The win sends DR Congo through to March’s inter-confederation play-offs, whilst Nigeria’s World Cup campaign comes to an end. The Congolese side will now prepare for their crucial play-off tie as they attempt to reach the global tournament.
