The Federal Government on Thursday closed its case against Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in his ongoing trial over allegations bordering on terrorism and treasonable felony.
The prosecution, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Adegboyega Awomolo, announced the closure of its case after presenting its fifth and final witness, identified only as EEE for security reasons.
The witness was led in evidence and cross-examined by the defence team before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
Awomolo told the court that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence, including audio and visual materials related to the activities of the IPOB leader, to warrant the conclusion of its case.
“After calling five witnesses in the trial, the prosecution is satisfied that from the avalanche of evidence tendered, including the broadcast of activities of the IPOB leader, the government has sufficiently satisfied the need to close its case. I therefore close the case,” Awomolo stated.
In response, lead defence counsel Kanu Agabi, SAN, informed the court of their intention to file a no-case submission, indicating that the defence believes the prosecution has failed to establish a prima facie case against the defendant.
The court is expected to fix a date for the hearing of the no-case submission, which, if upheld, could result in the dismissal of the charges against Kanu
