Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has said he is no longer desperate to return to power, revealing that his “spirit” had long departed the Government House.
Fubara made the remark on Sunday in Port Harcourt during a service of songs organised by the Rivers Elders Forum in honour of late elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark.
His comments come amid the political crisis in Rivers State, following President Bola Tinubu’s March 18 proclamation of a state of emergency. The President had also suspended Fubara, his deputy, Dr. Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months. Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.) was appointed as administrator to oversee the state during the suspension.
Speaking at the event, Fubara reiterated his desire for peace, saying the turmoil had taken an emotional toll on him.
“Do you think I’m even interested in returning to Government House?” he asked. “Don’t you see how much better I look? If I had my way, I wouldn’t wish to return there. My spirit left that place a long time ago.”
He continued, “There are some battles not worth fighting. All I desire is peace.”
Fubara also cautioned his supporters to always seek his consent before acting on his behalf, emphasizing the need for restraint in the face of the ongoing political impasse.
