Reports say a Sunday night meeting at the Lagos Governor’s residence in Marina, which resolved that Meranda would resigned her position as Speaker this Monday, at an emergency plenary session of the Lagos State House of Assembly, paving the way for impeached Mudashiru Obasa’s return and his immediate resignation.
According to summiters, it was resolved that Obasa and Meranda’s resignation letters must be received by the GAC on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, and a new candidate for Speaker from Lagos West Senatorial District will be selected and presented to lawmakers on the same Wednesday, by the GAC.
Meeting at plenary amid tight Security on Monday, Meranda announced her resignation before the lawmakers who subsequently returned Obasa as Speaker.
During the plenary session, which began at about 2:20 p.m., the lawmakers commended Meranda, describing her tenure as “positively life-transforming.”
“You have made history with your resilience and humility. Your time may be short, but you have written your name in gold”, Kehinde Joseph, representing Alimosho II, said.
Meranda assumed office on January 13, 2025, following the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
Obasa, who represents Agege 1 State Constituency, was first elected Speaker in 2015, making him the longest serving Speaker of the assembly, while Meranda is the first female Speaker of the House.
Meanwhile, three Principal Officers of the Lagos State House of Assembly have resigned.
The Principal Officers resigned on Monday during an emergency plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda.
Those who resigned were the Deputy Speaker, Mojeed Fatai; Chief Whip, Setonji David; and Deputy Chief Whip, Sani Okanlawon, has resigned.
Announcing his decision at a plenary session of the House on Monday, Fatai said his resignation takes immediate effect.
“I hereby tender my resignation as the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, effective today, March 3, 2025″, he said, in move designed to pave way for the return of Mojisola Meranda.
After the resignation of the Chief Whip and Deputy Chief Whip, David was reappointed as the Deputy Chief Whip.
After his resignation, Fatai was reappointed as the Chief Whip.
The resignation and reappointment was to allow for a return to the pre-January 13, 2025 era where Mudashiru Obasa was the Speaker of the Assembly.
