President Bola Tinubu has described the late Chief Edwin Clark as a gallant fighter for the rights of the Niger Delta people, a staunch advocate of true federalism, and a symbol of national unity.
Chief Clark, an elder statesman and former Federal Commissioner for Information, passed away on Monday at the age of 97.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over Clark’s passing, noting that Nigeria had lost a fearless voice in national affairs.
The President extended condolences to the Clark family, the Ijaw nation, the people of the Niger Delta, and the Delta State government.
Born on May 25, 1927, in Kiagbodo, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, Clark dedicated his life to public service, holding various positions as a councillor, state and federal cabinet member. He was also a relentless advocate for resource control and environmental justice in the Niger Delta.
Reflecting on Clark’s contributions, Tinubu described him as a towering figure who shaped Nigeria’s political landscape for nearly six decades.
“Chief Clark spoke for the Niger Delta. He spoke for the nation. His views and interventions on national issues were distinct and patriotic,” Tinubu stated.
The President praised Clark’s unwavering stance on justice and equity, adding that he never shied away from difficult conversations that could strengthen national unity.
“As an astute politician, his words carried weight, confidence, and conviction. He never hesitated to challenge injustice, even if it meant standing alone,” Tinubu noted.
He further acknowledged Clark’s pivotal role in advancing the cause of the Niger Delta, ensuring that the region’s concerns were brought to the national stage.
“History will remember him as a man who fought gallantly for the rights of the people of the Niger Delta, unity in diversity, and true federalism,” Tinubu said.
The President prayed for divine comfort for Clark’s family, friends, and all those mourning his passing.
