On Thursday, a tragic mid-air collision occurred between an American Eagle passenger flight carrying 64 people and a military helicopter with three U.S. soldiers on board. Dozens are feared dead as a result of the incident.
The PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 jet collided with a Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter around 9pm on Wednesday (02:00 GMT Thursday), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said.
The passenger Flight coming from Wichita, Kansas, with 60 passengers and four crew members, collided with the military helicopter, crashing into the Potomac River, near Reagan Washington National Airport.
Among the passengers were figure skating athletes, coaches and family members who had been at a development camp in Wichita, U.S. Figure Skating said.
All 67 people on board both aircraft are feared dead, Kansas Senator, Roger Marshall, said. Reports suggest at least 18 bodies have so far been recovered.
All takeoffs and landings from the airport have been halted. The FAA said the airport would be closed until at least 5am on Friday.
