For the first time in its 32 years history, graduating students of Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU), will be handed over their degree certificates during the 25th ceremony of the University.
The Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University, Prof. Uche Ikonne, stated this at the pre-convocation press briefing of the University at the Senate Building of the University in Uturu.
Ikonne however said this would be subject to their completing the necessary clearance and requirements for issuance of the degrees ahead of the scheduled on Saturday, 19 August.
He said ,“This is the first time this is happening in the history of Abia State University, and a major break through in the institution,” adding that the feat is one of his “Our Story Must Change,” agenda.
The VC gave a breakdown of the 4472 grad ands with 15 in the 1st Class category, 653 in the 2nd Class Upper, 2503 in the 2nd Class Lower, 558 3rd Class, 44 Passes, 87 Post Graduate Diplomas, 297 Masters, and 102 Doctors of Philosophy.
He said the occasion would include conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degrees on Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, CON, Dr. Uchenna Emeloye, and installation of the Professor Emeritus of the University, Pro. Frank
He added that ahead of the day, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwuka would deliver a pre-convocation lecture on “Nigeria and the Dynamics of Global Education.”
Ikonne said on Monday, the University organized a thanksgiving service officiated by the Arch Bishop, Methodist Church of Nigeria Okigwe Arch-Diocese, the Most Rev John Ene Koko Bassey.
According to him, the theme of the service, which was “Celebrating God’s Faithfulness”, was very apt for the occasion tagged “Silver Jubilee Convocation Ceremony.”
