The Centre for Atmospheric Research, Anyigba, in collaboration with the Federal University, Lokoja, on Monday, organised the first International Conference On Atmospheric Earth, and Space Science to tackle environmental health challenges across the globe.
The Conference with the Theme: Atmospheric And Environmental Sciences for Sustainable Development was held at the main Campus of the Federal University, Lokoja.
The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Lokoja, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi in his welcome address, praised the timing of the conference inview of the hazards associated with pollution and climate change being experienced in recent times, world over.
The Vice Chancellor said that the conference will go a long way in making recommendations on how to effectively mitigate atmospheric pollution and local climate regulation.
According to Professor Olayemi Akinwumi “Environmental Challenges such as flooding, erosion, drought amongst others would be elaborately discussed on their causes and solutions when the need arises
“Federal University Lokoja has a rich tradition of successfully hosting high-profile academic conferences, and we are excited to once again provide a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration.
“Federal University Lokoja remains dedicated to fostering research that drives solutions to these pressing global issues. We believe that the outcomes of this conference will not only advance = scientific understanding but will also contribute to the policies and actions necessary for sustainable development.
“However, I must emphasize that the success of this conference will be measured by how well we apply its outcomes in the real world. Knowledge is powerful, but it is the practical implementation of that knowledge that will create the lasting impact we all desire.
“I urge all participants to engage fully in the discussions, share your insights, and collaborate on innovative ideas that will move us closer to sustainable environmental practices. Together, we can contribute to shaping a future where science leads the way in promoting sustainability and protecting our environment.
“While you are here, I also hope that you find time to explore the vibrant city of Lokoja and its surroundings. Our community is known for its warm hospitality anda rich cultural heritage, and I am confident that you will enjoy your stay.
” I must commend the Local Organizing Committee for their meticulous planning and hard work. Your efforts have heen instrumental in ensuring the seamless organization of this conference, and we are proud of the standard you have set.
“I am confident that this conference will be both productive and inspiring for all involved.
Earlier in his speech, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), under the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science & Technology, Dr Matthew Olumide Adepoju, declared that Nigeria’s Energy Transition plan intends to achieve net Zero emissions by 2060.
He called for collective stringent measures on climate and air quality issues
“I appreciate this conference’s organizers (the Federal University Lokoja and our Centre for Atmospheric Research, Anyigba) for combining ideas and resources to develop the 1st International Conference on Atmospheric, Earth, and Space Sciences here in Lokoja.
“Considering the multi-dimensional activities in the space environment, it is undoubtedly the right call at the right time.
“Technically speaking, pollution kill, and it is a threat to human existence, due to the fact that a total of 6.7 million premature deaths are linked to the combined effects of household and ambient air pollution per year as established by the World Health Organization.
“Ladies and gentlemen! Air pollution is a silent killer; therefore, all hands must be on deck to wrestle against its threat to humanity and ecosystems”
