INEC Declares Governor Douye Diri Re-elected

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has been declared re-elected by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, following Saturday governorship election in which he polled 175,196 votes to defeat his closest rival, former Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipreye Sylva, who scored 110,108 votes.

The INEC’s Returning Officer for the election and Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, declared Diri winner and returned elected on Saturday, in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital, announced the results on Monday.

Governor Diri was candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, while Chief Timipre Sylva, was a candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

INEC said that of the total number of registered voters was 1,570,862, accredited votes was 372,000.
