The Nigerian Police, Benue State Command has dismissed Belasa Iyangedue, a constable for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl who was in detention.
The victim was detained on August 15 for alleged defamation at the Divisional Police headquarters, Tse Agbaragba, Konshisha LGA of the state.
While in detention, she was said to have fallen for the wiles of the constable, who pretended to offer assistance to the unsuspecting girl in her cell, then took her into an office where he raped her.
The underage girl was said to have reported the case to the DPO. This led to the arrest of the constable and the case was brought to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Makurdi.
According to the state’s Commissioner of Police, Bartholomew Onyeka, who spoke on the matter on October 3rd in Makurdi, the state’s capital, “the constable was not only dismissed but he is facing prosecution. When civilians commit such offences they are prosecuted. He is facing dismissal and prosecution.”
