Maranatha University, a faith-based tertiary institution in Lagos held its first matriculation ceremony on Wednesday at the multipurpose hall of the Okota Campus of the University in Lagos.
The University was established in 2021 to produce “godly graduates who will be globally competitive and advantageously placed to change the society.”
In his matriculation address, the Vice – Chancellor of the University, Professor Rufus Taiwo Akinyele, observed that Western education, especially Information, Communication and Technology, has changed the world but left the society behind.
He added that the missing link provides the justification for faith-based institutions, adding that the University will promote the study of French and Chinese Languages to prepare the students for the challenge of globalization and foreign mission.
He reminded the matriculating students that they are bound to face some challenges as pioneers of Maranatha University; but that they should also consider these as opportunities.
Quoting the view expressed by the American author, Orison Swett Marden, he said “The golden opportunity you are seeking is in yourself, it is not in your environment, it is not in your luck or chance or the help of others, it is in yourself alone”.
The Pro-Chancellor of the University, Rev. Chukwuemeka Ngubo, disclosed the vision that birthed the University; namely the training of future leaders intellectually, physical and spiritually which is expressed by the Total Man Concept (TMC).
He unveiled the plans to make the University truly outstanding in Science and Technology education and the commitment to Christian values. The Deputy Vice – Chancellor of Anchor University, Professor Johnson Fatokun, who was one of the Special Guests, admonished the students to be of good conduct and character as ambassadors of Maranatha University, and of Christ.
