The Police in Lagos State has confirmed that normalcy has returned to the Ojota area of the state after an early morning fracas caused by a clash between Yoruba Nation agitators and the Oodua People’s Congress, OPC.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Police in Lagos, Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the development said, “ Normalcy has been restored to the area.”
The agitators had gathered for a rally on Monday morning to press for self-determination.
In the ensuing clash between the combatants, two persons were feared dead. The security agency narrated how the protesters opened fire against its officers, leaving two seriously wounded.
Sources said members of the Oodua People’s Congress had tried to join the demonstration, which met resistance from the Yoruba Nation agitators.
The police were said to have moved to disperse them and then took over the area.
Meanwhile, Aare Onakakanfo of Yoruba land, Iba Gani Adams has dismissed claims that members of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) were involved in the fracas.
Adams who said in a statement that the demonstration, “came as a surprise and caught everybody unaware”.
He said the reports that linked OPC to the event were wrong.
“I want to state it clearly that none of our members was at the scene. OPC is not against the liberation of the Yoruba race. Our position on regionalism is very clear. It is sacrosanct because that is what we are seeking at the moment.
“Nigeria should be restructured to full regional autonomy, where each region will be at liberty to operate at their own pace”, the statement added.
