Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State and Director General of Campaign Council of the All Progressives Congress, APC, standard bearer in the upcoming 2023 presidential election, has apologised for his indiscretion in pressing his credentials as a papal knight of the Catholic Church in service of the political appointment.
In a letter he wrote to the president of the Bishop Conference of Nigeria and Archbishop of Owerri, Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, dated August 12, 2023, Lalong apologised profusely for his realisation in wrongly making references to his “credentials as a Catholic and papal knight and in the process to the Holy Father.”
He said the hue and cry that greeted his appointment from the Christian community, he had to grant interviews during which he made references to his faith and position.
“I now realise that was an error on my part and has caused some level of concerns and even embarrassment to many especially my members in the family of the family of papal knights to which I belong. I understand that I may have overreached myself in the course of trying to defend my personal decision in accepting the appointment and thus, the reference to the holy father was not intended as an act of disrespect to his exalted and high office.”
“Your grace, by this written letter, I wish to tender my unreserved apologies and ask for their understanding and forgiveness from my brothers in the Catholic faith and through you to the entire members of the Bishop Conference, our fathers and leaders.”
