The embattled junta in Mali has got a big relief as lawmakers unanimously approved a plan allowing the military junta to rule for up to five years.
Though no date has yet been set for future polls, the coup plotters had been battling to legitimize their stay by bluffing calls from regional leaders of ECOWAS and the AU to draw a timeline for return to civil rule. In the stiff opposition from the regional and continental leaders, the military leaders had promised to conduct election last month but cancelled it prompting economic sanctions by regional bloc ECOWAS.
With the lifeline from their lawmakers the country leaders are now thinking of taking legal action to lift sanctions imposed by West Africa’s monetary union, Uemoa, as it battles a debt crisis.
