On the grounds that workers in its employ and payroll cannot fit into the digital technology environment which the country would start operating from June, MTN Nigeria has disengage 280 staff.
Many of the staff who had been with the information telecommunication giant since its inception in Nigeria were on Friday, April 28 served their letters in two options, the Voluntary Severance Scheme (VSS), urging staff to apply for voluntary disengagement and compulsory disengagement. 200 workers applied for the VSS, while 80 were given compulsory disengagement.
The affected workers were given a severance pay of 75 per cent of their gross monthly income, multiplied by the number of years they had worked with the company.
Though workers were informed of the new move in March, many are yet to get used to their disengagement because they felt they should have been redeployed to other areas in the company where their services could still be useful. The talk that the company needs new staff to man the new digital environment rankled many of the affected workers who felt that little in house training could have taken care of that.
