Gov Obaseki of Edo State
Governor Godwin Obaseki has emerged the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in an indirect conducted by the party to choose its candidate for the September 19 2020 governorship poll.
In the primary which attracted delegates from 192 wards from across the 18 local government of the state and was held at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium in Benin-City, the state capital on Thursday, he scored 1,950 votes in the exercise that was really a mere formality after other aspirants stepped down for him. Chief returning officer for the exercise, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State said total number of delegates is 2,234. The actual delegated is 2,022. .
Engr Gideon Ikhine, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, Kenneth Imasuagbon who were the governor’s main challengers said they had to step down for the sake of unity and internal democracy in the party. Imasuagbon, who said he had been in the race for the past 16 years said: “I want the party to be strong, Obaseki is a great guy who means well for Edo State, he also helped us to rid the state of godfatherism. I saw in him the things I want to have.”
