The Naraguta Community of Jos North Local Government Council in Plateau State has dragged the University of Jos and the Nigeria Army to the Federal High Court sitting in Jos Division over the invasion and demolition of their houses numbering 100.
Fifty (50) Members of Naraguta Hausa speaking persons approached the court accusing the university of Jos of failing to follow the right procedure before embarking on the demolition of the houses which were built on the varsity’s plots .
The portion of the land in question was acquired by the government in 1973 from the government owned Naraguta mining company for the expansion project of the University’s permanent site.
In their affidavit in support of motion ex-parte, one Sadisu Muhammad Musa with 49 others said that the demolition of their residential houses in Naraguta village was done illegally by the university of Jos, thereby rendering them homeless .
The Plaintiffs lamented that the management of the university brought soldiers to carry out the demolition.
They fingered one Sub Lieutenant Faruk Yusuf in their petition, alleging that he was deployed from Operation Safe Heaven, Sector 1 in Jos North LGA to lead the operation that was carried out with bulldozers and excavators under the watchful eyes of the representative of the first defendant, Colonel Chambak Rtd .
They complained that apart from the 100 houses, jewelries, furniture and school certificates were not spare by bulldozers .
Justice Dorcas Agishi adjourned hearing in the suit to June 16 ,2020 and directed the counsel to the the Plaintiffs to deliver their letter of service to the Registrar of University of Jos, to restrain the management from continuing with their perimeter fencing around the university.
