An Abia 2023 governorship hopeful, Chief Uduma Olugu has described the rate of development in the state as very slow and far behind what is obtained in many states of the country.
Olugu stated this while speaking to newsmen after attending a political forum at the headquarters of Ohafia local government area, Ebem Ohafia, saying he has ideas to drive the state.
He noted that the state has enough natural and human capital to move it forward far beyond where it has remained for decades due to low quality and non-committed leadership.
“This is why I am offering myself for this this job. I know how to get it right. It is just a matter of setting the agenda, picking the right people for it, and fixing the time frame,” he said.
The Lagos-based businessman argued however, that the blame should not be heaped on the leaders alone, but also on the electorate for not standing up for the desired change yet.
Olugu, who maintained sealed lips over his political party, explained that the challenge is not about political party, but the attitude of those who have found themselves on the seat.
He endorsed the agitation by the people of Ohafia Udumeze clan in the area to produce the governor in 2023, arguing that since 1999, they are yet to occupy a strategic elective political office.
His words, “It is very regrettable that since then, despite our huge population and number of registered voters, we are yet to produce a House of Representatives member, Senator or governor of the state.”
He appealed for a synergy among the people to pursue the agenda especially based on the state Charter of Equity, which stipulates that the seat should rotate among the three senatorial districts.
“It began in Abia North in 1999 from where it moved to the central and now is in the south. Having done the first round, it should return to the north, where Ohafia is to begin the second round,” he added.
