The Plateau State government has partnered Umah Publishers to herald intra and inter-secondary schools reading and learning contest in both public and private Secondary Schools, with a clarion call on the Principals of various schools in the state to welcome the ‘idea’ and key in.
The “Contest,” is targeted at improving reading culture among students and make education a rewarding enterprise in the country.
The aide to the permanent secretary , Ministry of Education, Mr. Nuwatta Kangrusa, in a letter dated September 30 and directed to all Principals of public and private schools, the government urged them to ensure that their students participated in the contest actively.
Meanwhile, the General Manager of Umah Publishers Nigeria Limited, Mr. lke Tochukwu, says “they have received both Federal and State Ministries of Education ‘Consent and Approvals,’ to commence the “literary Contest,” among Secondary Schools, in Nigeria, with the maiden edition starting in Plateau state, first, and all the secondary schools students spread across the 36 states including Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Speaking to journalists in Jos, Tochukwu disclosed that one of their corporate cardinal social responsibility to the society, is to promote reading culture and improve learning skills in secondary schools.
Tochukwu called on Local Government Chairmen in the state and the country to key into the project by sponsoring more indigent students who cannot afford the cost of literary books that would be used for the upcoming “contest.”
According to him, in order to promote reading culture in schools and to improve students’ communication skills, with well comprehensive and articulated education materials, so many novels have been authored by some literary scholars who had demonstrated prolific and precocious literary abilities, outlined and designed as guideline to aid the event and its participants.
