Senators Mao Ohuabunwa and Orji Uzor Kalu
National/State Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal (Panel 2) siting in Umuahia, the Abia state capital will deliver judgement on the petition filed by Senator Mao Ohuabunwa against Senator Orji Kalu on September 9, 2019.
A day ahead of the date, the three-man tribunal headed by Hon Justice Cornelius Akintayo will deliver judgement on another petition filed before it by Chief Nnamdi Orji against Hon Uko Nkole.
Ohuabunwa, and Orji contested the Abia North Senatoral District and Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency seats at the National Assembly in the 2019 general election against Kalu and Nkole respectively.
Ohuabunwa and Nkole who both were in the 8th session of the Assembly contested the elections on the platform of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against Kalu and Orji of the All Progressive Congress (APC).
At the end of adoption of written addresses by counsel for parties in both matters, Tuesday, a member of the panel, Hon Justice Igwe P.C. Igwe commended them and their clients for the orderly conduct of the proceedings.
Earlier, the counsel, which included Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN), in their respective prayers asked the tribunal to resolve the matter in favour of their client, dismissing the submission of the other party.
Speaking to journalists at the High Court premises after, Ohuabunwa, who was the chairman of the 8th Senate Committee on Primary Health-Care said litigation is all about quality of evidence brought before the abiter.
Insisting that he came to the tribunal to seek justice in view of what happened in the election, the Senator, added that his counsel, Chief Den Wigwe had done the needful, “the rest now lies with the tribunal.”
The one time leader of the South East PDP caucus in the House of Representatives when he represented the constituency from 1999-2007, used the forum to thank and appeal to the PDP members and his supporters to remain calm and law-abiding.
Efforts to reach Kalu, a former governor of the state and the chief majority whip of the Senate by our correspondent for his reaction to the development on his mobile phone at the time of filling this report proved abortive.
