The Kogi State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Pharm. Sanusi Yahaya has praised the intervention of the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) in reconstructing collapsed drainages in Lokoja metropolis.
The Commissioner gave the commendation while on an inspection visit to the ongoing projects located at Ganaja to Dunamis church Junction and Second 200 Housing Estate in Lokoja, the state capital over the weekend.
The Commissioner expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done so far and speedy reconstruction of the drainages.
Yahaya also expressed joy that the reconstruction of the collapsed drainages would go a long way in preventing possible flooding in the Confluence City as it will boost free flow and channelling of water on the right direction.
“The reconstruction had been done and the water is now flowing freely without any obstruction. We commend His Excellently, Governor Yahaya Bello for his intervention through NEWMAP” the commissioner said.
He however, warned against nonchalant attitudes of some residents who had formed the habit of dumping refuse in water channels and urged them to desist from such act adding that they should also ensure that wastes are properly disposed to avoid possible health hazards.
The commissioner reiterated the ministry’s commitment to ensure that the Kogi State Sanitation and Waste Management Board live up to its responsibility in enforcement of environmental laws and other interventions capable of imbibing the spirit of cleanliness among citizens in various communities across the state.
