Rising from the quarterly meeting of its standing committee in Bauchi, the Bauchi state capital, the Nigerian Guild of Editors has urged its members and the media to remain professional in the reportage of the electoral process ahead of the 2109 general election.
It said that issued based campaign should form the main focus in the coverage and processing of materials dealing with elections while hate speeches and those who embark on campaign of calumny should be attract no attention.
In a statement signed by the body’s President, Mrs Funke Egbemode and General Secretary, Mrs Victoria Ibanga, the Guild urged journalists to “abide by the Media Code on Election Coverage and ensure balanced reportage, fairness to all and display a high degree of professionalism especially at this (electioneering) time”
It decried the issue of vote buying and remanded the electorate to perform their civic duty by voting according to their conscience and not succumb to the temptations of vote selling, which would lead to a bad future for them and the country’s democracy.
