After the couples exchanged vows and and pledged “For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part,” to one another before Queen Elizabeth and 600 guests at the St George’s Chapel, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle who will henceforth be known and addressed as Duke and Duchess of Sussex, took a drive through Windsor along a route including Castle Hill, High Street, Sheet Street, Kings Road, Albert Road, Long Walk and back to the castle, to warm up with 100,000 well-wishers who lined the route. Included by association were millions of admires the world over who stayed glued to their TV set to watch the live broadcast.
More remarkable with the wedding was the so many break with tradition that it presented: Prince Harry, 33, reportedly wore a wedding ring, while Markle, 36 and black, who wore Queen Mary’s diamond bandeau tiara, loaned to her by the Queen did not promise to ‘obey’ her husband in her vows.
According to the BBC, Prince Harry’s ring is a platinum band with a textured finish and Ms Markle’s has been made from a piece of Welsh gold.
All the 1,200 guests invited for the event were made up of celebrities and those recognised for their charity work. They included tennis star Serena Williams, TV personality James Corden, singer James Blunt, actor Carey Mulligan, and rugby star Jonny Wilkinson, Oprah Winfrey, Sir Elton John, George and Amal Clooney, David and Victoria Beckham . Notably absent were politicians and Heads of States, who were excluded because the event was not a state event, even though Markle’s veil measuring 5m was embroidered with the flowers of each country in the Commonwealth. British Prime Minister, Theresa May however twitted her congratulation:
“My very best wishes to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on their wedding day. To all of those joining the national celebration with street parties and other events, have a wonderful day”, she said in her tweet
Also, Ms Markle reportedly broke with tradition for royal brides and made a speech during the reception for 1,200 guests on the grounds of the Windsor Castle, sponsored by the Queen. Later in the evening, the newlyweds celebrated with 200 close friends and family at a private reception less than a mile from Windsor Castle at Frogmore House, hosted by Prince Charles.
