Less than a week to the presidential primary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, former Anambra State governor, Mr Peter Obi has resigned from the party citing “recent developments within our party make it practically impossible to continue participating and making such constructive contributions.”
In a letter of resignation dated May 24,2022 and marked received by the office of the National Chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu to which it was addressed, Mr Obi said he informed the chairman of Agula Ward 2 in Anambra state pf his resignation on May 20, 2022 and was informing the chairman of both his resignation and his withdrawal from the presidential primary taking place on May 28 and 29.
He said, “I am writing to intimate you of my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party, which was conveyed to the Chairman of Agulu Ward 2. Anaocha LGA Anambra, effective Friday 20 May, 2022. Consequently, I am by this letter informing you of my withdrawal for the PDP Presidential Primaries.
“It has been a great honour to contribute to nation-building efforts through our party. Unfortunately, recent developments within our party make it practically impossible to continue participating and making such constructive contributions.
“Our national challenges are deep-seated and require that we each make profound sacrifices towards rescuing our country. My commitment to rescuing Nigeria remains firm, even if the route differs.
Until his resignation from the party and withdrawal from the presidential race, Obi was among the 15 aspirants vying for the party presidential ticket. Others are Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; Dr Bukola Saraki; Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and his Sokoto counterpart, Aminu Tambuwal; industrialist Sam Ohanbuwa, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state; banker, Mohammed Hayatu Deen; former Secretary to the Federal Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim Pius; Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State; Publisher Delel Momodu and former Ekiti governor, Ayo Fayose. They have all been screened by the Senatro David Mark Committee for the presidential race.
