No fewer than 100 women have been arrested by security personnel in Jos, the Plateau state capital following Sunday hostility that led to the death of five youths at Ungwan Miango, popularly called Mansion and Dutse Uku around University of Jos community
The crisis is said to have taken a sectarian dimension forcing the security agencies to adopt drastic measures to prevent it from escalating.
Information available to our medium shows that in the early hours of Monday when two Hilux van full of security arrived the communities and began indiscriminate arrest of natives.
The Plateau State Police Command of the Nigeria Police Force, according to its PPRO, DSP Tyopev Terna, said they received a report from one Sarki Arum ‘m’ of Tina Area of Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State that one Enock Monday ‘m’ of Tina was seen lying motionless at an area between Dutse Uku and Angwan Damisa in Jos North Local Government.
“The Command immediately mobilised to the area and removed the body to Plateau Specialist Hospital where the doctor confirmed him dead and the corpse deposited at the mortuary of the same hospital.
He said youths of the area started protesting when the news of Enock’s death filtered into the community.
“As a result of the protest, five (5) persons lost their lives and twelve (12) houses were burnt down.
“The Area Commander Jos Metro mobilised personnel of the divisions within his jurisdiction and moved with the Commanding Officer of 8PMF and the Divisional Police Officer of Nasarawa Gwong Division under whose jurisdiction the crime was committed to the scene of the crime.
“With the efforts of the Area Commander Jos Metro, the Commander of Operation Safe Haven, the Commanding Officer 8PMF and the Divisional Police Officer Nasarawa Gwong Division, the situation has been brought under control.
The area is being patrolled. Residents of the area are enjoyed to remain calm. Efforts are on to track and arrest those who were involved in the criminal protest,” he said.
