A man suspected to have attempted to smuggle N49m out of the country through the Kaduna International Airport, initially showed up to own up to the ownership of the money and then disappeared into thin air before the arrival of men of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
This is coming barely a week after the airport started serving as a new international gateway into the country, following the temporary closure of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, for repairs,
In a statement, EFCC spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said the bags were found to contain freshly minted notes with seals indicating that they came straight from the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Plc.
He said: “During a routine baggage screening, five sacks were sighted unattended to and without tags; they contained fresh bulk items suspected to be money.
“Upon examination, the bags were found to contain crispy Naira notes of N200 denomination in 20 bundles totaling N40m and N50 denomination in 180 bundles totaling N9m with seals purportedly emanating from the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Plc seen on the packs.”
Confirming Uwujaren’s statement, the Head of the EFCC, Kaduna Zonal Office, Mr. Ibrahim Bappah, told reporters that bags weighing 150kg were found in the baggage check-in of the airport, ready to be taken out of the country.
On the identity of the owner, Bappah said; “His inability to give any concrete explanation made him become uncomfortable and he disappeared into thin air before the arrival of EFCC operatives,”
