The Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate, George Moghalu, has suffered an early setback in the ongoing Anambra State governorship election, losing his own polling unit to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate, Professor Chukwuma Soludo.
Preliminary results from Polling Unit 017, Uruagu Ward 1, Nnewi North Local Government Area, indicate a decisive lead for Soludo. Out of 463 registered voters, only 86 were accredited to vote.
Soludo reportedly secured 57 votes at the polling unit, while Moghalu managed 22 votes. The remaining ballots were distributed among other participating parties, reflecting a fragmented voter preference beyond the two leading candidates.
Observers at the unit noted a low voter turnout, attributing it to either voter apathy or logistical challenges in the early hours of the election. Nevertheless, election officials confirmed that the voting process was largely peaceful and conducted in accordance with Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines.
The result from Uruagu Ward 1, traditionally considered a Labour Party stronghold, has raised concerns among party supporters, as early trends suggest Soludo is consolidating support across other wards in Nnewi North.
Meanwhile, Labour Party agents have vowed to monitor the collation process closely and ensure that all votes are accurately accounted for, highlighting the importance of transparency and fairness in the electoral exercise.
