The long arm of the law caught up with Yinusa Dahiru, the 26 year-old abductor and rapist of Ese Oruru, a teenage girl from Bayelsa State, when a Federal High Court sitting in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, on Thursday, sentenced him to 26 years imprisonment over the abduction.

The 13-year-old Oruru was abducted, raped and impregnated by Yunusa Dahiru, in 2015. The kidnap took a bizarre twist when after many months of search, her parents and lawyers traced the teenager to the palace of the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, now deposed. It took a national outrage for the Emir to yield to pressure to release the teenager to her parents.

Presiding judge, Justice Jane Inyang, acquitted the accused on the first count but convicted Dahiru on the remaining four charges. The judge ruled that the sentence will run consecutively.
