Tribunal Declares PDP Adeleke Winner of Osun Poll

Election The Osun State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Abuja on Friday declared Senator Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner in the 2018 governorship election in the state.

Justice Obiora Obi who delivered the ruling of the three-man Tribunal said that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Gboyega Oyetola, were not validly returned.

It held that the Returning Officer who cancelled the results in the seven wards had no power to do so and that the supplementary election that was held in consequence was a product of an illegal cancellation

The tribunal also dismissed the objections filed by the APC and its candidate, as well as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against the petition challenging their victory at the September 2018 election.

The PDP had filed the petition challenging Oyetola’s victory and asked the tribunal to declare that Adeleke polled the highest lawful votes and should be declared the winner.

Oyetola, APC and INEC filed their notices of preliminary objection contending the court’s jurisdiction and petition to hear the petition.
Justice Obi dismissed the objections as misconceived, adding that that the Tribunal has jurisdiction to hear the petition.
