SDP NEC Adopts Buhari

Unsettled by the continued rift between factional presidential candidates on the platform of the party who are still seeking legal support, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) rose from a meeting on Thursday and adopted President Muhammadu Buhari as its candidate for the 2019 election.

Former Minister of Information and National Orientation, Prof Jerry Gana, and former Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke, are the presidential candidates still battling in the court to reclaim their mandate.

Duke had won the presidential ticket at the party’s primaries in Abuja in December, but Gana went to court and got judgment on the grounds that Duke’s emergence violated the party’s constitution, which states that presidential candidate and party chairman cannot come from the same geopolitical zone, which was the case with Duke. But Duke got another judgment restoring his candidature, thus propelling the party into lingering crisis.

Though details of the meeting are yet to emerge as it is still ongoing, there are indications that the adoption is by a faction of the party.
