Governor Lalong of Plateau State
Against the backdrop of the mass murder of over 174 people in Plateau state, the Deputy Chairman of the Plateau Youth Council, Mr Gongden Othniel has decried what he called the politicization of the frequent clashes between farmers and herders in the country leading to the massacre of innocent souls and called on the Federal Government to withdraw the Security Task Force deployed to restore peace in the state.
Urging the PYC members to show concern for the lives of their fellow citizens and “rise to defend and protect the lives of our innocent citizens from the external aggression”, he lamented that, “we are all guilty of allowing politics and politician to divide us”.
“The PYC reject military presence in the land. Mr President, they are not solution to the mayhem except dialogue. Enemies of Plateau state have infiltrated into our land splitting innocent blood”.
“We have lost confidence in the STF by calling on federal government to urgently remove the military and replace them with “operation rainbow “we don’t want them anymore in our land,” he said.
He said government at all levels must embark on aggressive confidence building measures to restore hope, normalcy and reclaiming of the lands of our people that have been displaced .This, according to him, remains a primary responsibility of government and must be given utmost priority. Government, he said, must be deliberate in directing development partners and donors agencies to ameliorate the intense suffering of our people.
“We call on the federal government to as a matter of priority urgently review its security strategies as it relates to the current security architecture within which it has presence in Plateau state since 2001 .
He condemned all forms of terror by whomever they are perpetrated and stated that the present security agencies in the state are operating under a climate of mistrust by the communities which are currently vulnerable and helpless. “This is not good for state citizens relations.”, he concluded,
