Senator Mao Ohuabunwa has lauded the judiciary for his victory over Senator Orji Uzor Kalu at the National and State Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal (Panel 2) sitting in Umuahia, the Abia state capital.
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Kalu of the All Progressive Congress (APC) winner of the Abia North Senatorial District in the 2019 general election with Ohuabunwa of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the runner-up.
Ohuabunwa in a statement by the Director General of his campaign organisation, Follow Better Campaign Organisation, Dr. Ndubusi Eke, said the judiciary has once again proved itself as the last hope of the common man.
The tribunal Monday in a unanimous judgement delivered by Justice I.A. Igwe invalidated the election of Kalu over non compliance with the Electoral Act in the 2019 general election.
The statement said, “I thank God first who has always sustained me and my victory as I passed through this way in 2015/2016. So, I am confident that God will again sustain this victory. No one can subvert the will of the people.
According to the statement, which is in our possession, “Abia North people have been in distress and agony ever since their mandate was stolen in a broad day robbery. They are curiously waiting for an opportunity to recover it.”
Invalidating the election, the tribunal ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to within 90 days, conduct a supplementary poll between the senators at polling units and wards where the non-compliance occurred.
Eke, who said the onetime speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament went to the tribunal “to get justice”, expressed satisfaction and confidence that the Appeal Court will uphold “the verdict of the people and tribunal by the grace of God.”
