The Federal Government’s plan to invest N72 billion to improve capacity utilization of 2,000 Megawatts (MW) by consumers across the country has been praised as the right initiative to address the challenge of redistributing generated but unused electricity in the past
Making this observation was the Chairman of an NGO, the Consumer Rights Initiative, CRAAAI, Moses Igbrude.
In a signed statement in Lagos over the weekend, he also welcomed the riot act read by the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, in Abuja recently, ordering the power companies to provide electricity to Nigerians or leave the stage for more serious players.
The NGO helmsman maintained that nothing should be left undone in order to make the nation’s electric power sector work, saying that the economy will receive a heavy boost if the power sector works to appreciable level.
In the same vein, Igrude called on the National Assembly to expedite action on the bill before it seeking to criminalise estimated billing, stating that the bill would enable the power sector function more properly and help the electric distribution companies operate more responsibly and in the overall interest of the country.
It should be recalled that Fashola, had in February earlier this year met with the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) on how the 2,000 stranded megawatts (MW) of electricity could be delivered to industries and households.
