Matthew Seiyefa, the most senior officer of the State Security Service to whom Daura was directed to hand over to until further notice, has emerged the new DG.

He alongside Ibrahim Magu, Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, met with acting President Osinbajo in his Aso Villa office until 4:pm. He hails from Bayelsa State.

Seiyefa, Daura’s successor had earlier served as the Director of the Institute of Security Studies (ISS), before he was transferred to the DSS headquarters.

With about 34 years of experience, Seiyefa had served in different capacities, including State Director in Osun, Akwa Ibom, and Lagos states.

Seiyefa is also a member of the National Institute.

Nigerians in the early hours of Tuesday learnt to their dismay that masked security men from the Directorate of Security Services, DSS had besieged the National Assembly.

Members of the two-chamber legislature went on break on 24 July to resume on September 25. Heeding the plea of President Muhammadu Buhari to reconvene to ensure continuous running of all arms of government, the members were about to meet when operatives of the DSS, wearing masks blocked the gates of the National Assembly Tuesday morning, preventing senators and workers from gaining entrance.

Nigerians have been condemning the blockade as anti-democratic. It forced the leadership of the National Assembly to call off a scheduled meeting for the afternoon, that would probably have paved way for the reconvening of the Assembly.

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo acted decisively by ordering the sacking of the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Lawal Daura.

According to a tweet by Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant to the Acting President Osinbajo has ” directed the termination of the appointment of the DG of the DSS, Mr. Lawal Musa Daura”.

“Mr. Daura has been directed to hand over to the most senior officer of the State Security Service until further notice”, Akande said.

Meanwhile, the sacked DG, Daura has been ordered arrested by Osinbajo who promised to launch and investigation and deal with all those implicated in the siege.
