Authorities of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau state have accused security personnel of breaching measures on covid-19 lockdown, leading to the illegal entrance of eight persons through border towns.

Chairman of the LGA, Barr Ezekiel Mandyau, who disclosed this on Saturday during a press briefing that followed the apprehension of the culprits, disclosed that the eight persons who have been quarantined came in through the borders of Abuja, Kaduna and Bauchi states respectively.

He lamented that the culprits took “advantage of our spurious borders to bribe security personnel to enter the state because before now we had challenges of the personnel compromising the measures put in place to control the pandemic.

Barr Ezekiel lamented that though the council has “placed the security personnel on monthly stipends to help them meet up with the family needs, yet we have routes in Wamba, Jos east and Bauchi engaged in the smuggling of goods and persons.”

He commended the state Governor Simon Bako Lalong for his remarkable measure taken to safeguard the lives of citizens but tasked the people to show cooperation by obeying social distances and hand washing, including monitoring of visitors.

On the distribution of palliatives to the poor, he said, “as a council we don’t have a specific numbers of the beneficiaries at hand, with the lockdown virtually everyone is directly affected and the committee on ground which I chair will have to take a holistic approach to ensure vulnerable people are carried along.”

According to him many citizens are violating the official anti-covid-19 measures out of ignorance and called on them to see the need to observe directive on social distancing and stay- at- home as part of preventive measures.

To curb the menace, Mandyau said the council had already taken steps to stop the spread of the virus by inaugurating an eight -man committee to educate and sensitized the peoples to the danger of the virus to their lives.
